In 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle struck New Zealand’s North Island, causing widespread flooding, landslides, and severe damage to the KiwiRail network. The impacts ranged from minor footing undermining and localized structural damage to the complete loss of bridges.
This catastrophic event has led to what could become the largest insurance claim in New Zealand’s history. Infrastructure Consulting was engaged by the insurance loss adjuster to provide independent advice and a comprehensive review of the bridge engineering aspects related to the claim.
