Sedgwick Loss Adjuster

Project Brief & Outcome

When Cyclone Gabrielle struck New Zealand's North Island, we were brought in to provide independent advice & a comprehensive review of the KiwiRail bridge damages.

In 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle struck New Zealand’s North Island, causing widespread flooding, landslides, and severe damage to the KiwiRail network. The impacts ranged from minor footing undermining and localized structural damage to the complete loss of bridges.

This catastrophic event has led to what could become the largest insurance claim in New Zealand’s history. Infrastructure Consulting was engaged by the insurance loss adjuster to provide independent advice and a comprehensive review of the bridge engineering aspects related to the claim.

Our scope of work includes:

  • Structural Assessments: Evaluating the extent of damage to affected bridges.
  • Temporary Measures: Reviewing and advising on short-term stabilization strategies.
  • Repair and Replacement Concepts: Designing robust solutions tailored to the varied damage scenarios.
  • Standards and Fatigue Analysis: Addressing the implications of evolving design standards, historical load conditions, and long-term fatigue effects.
  • Staging and Constructability: Ensuring practical and efficient construction sequences to restore network functionality.

Through our involvement, we aim to support a thorough and balanced resolution to this claim, while contributing to the restoration of New Zealand’s vital rail infrastructure.
