Infrastructure Consulting teamed with local Territory Contractor, TCS to design and deliver upgrades to the Jim Jim Creek Crossing in the world heritage listed Kakadu National Park.
The crossing of the Jim Jim Creek has been a feature of Kakadu National Park tours for decades. Tourists and locals alike fondly remember the thrill and challenge of this deep water, 4WD only crossing.
The Problem
The build up of a bar downstream of the crossing however saw the average depth gradually increase year on year, to the point where only the most capable of vehicles could safely cross.
In order to reinstate accessibility of the crossing, Parks and the Traditional decided that upgrades were necessary. The kicker, they wanted to retain the thrill and experience of a water crossing.
The solution also needed to be built in one dry season, avoid environmental impact, not require drainage of the creek, and reduce the risk/exposure of the construction team to the Saltwater Crocodiles that inhabit the area.
The Solution
TCS and IC delivered a winning D&C tender that could be installed progressively over itself, and fixed and finished from above the structure to reduce working in the water. The design also incorporated temporary croc cages which were moved along as the structure progressed.
From a permanent works perspective, the design was assessed for the high flows and overtopping conditions, log impact and blockage by debris inherent to the project location.
The Outcome
The project was delivered on time, on budget and with no cultural, safety or environmental incidents. No mean feat in such a sensitive and remote location.
As to the experience, having crossed it several times, we can confirm it is still a thrill!
