The Viterra bulk loading plant (BLP) at Wallaroo, a pivotal grain export facility on South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula, has supported the region’s agricultural industry since the early 1950s. When Viterra sought to extend the plant’s operational life, they engaged Infrastructure Consulting (IC) for an in-depth inspection of the gallery support structures. Following the “Wharf Structures Condition Assessment Manual” the inspections sought to assess structural integrity and identify immediate and long-term maintenance needs.
IC identified microbial attack, and fatigue cracking in the structures which would threaten the ongoing viability of the structures. Following the inspection, IC collaborated with Viterra and Maritime Constructions to deliver a robust remediation strategy and a full trestle replacement design. The remediation focused on addressing structural safety risks whilst maintaining operations at all times.
The works are being executed in a staged manner commencing in 2022, importantly, the design and construction of the works has allowed Viterra’s operations to continue at all times. Close collaboration with Maritime Constructions enabled a streamlined construction process, reducing both on-site time and costs for Viterra and helping ensure this essential export facility remains in top condition for the future.
